GROWING NATIVES

An effective replacement to using riprap around your pond or retention basin is a Native planting. These plantings provide many advantages over riprap, they help reduce and/or eliminate erosion and sedimentation problems. The other advantages are a better appearance, improved water quality, cost effective, geese control, and improved air quality. Native vegetation aids in removing nitrogen and phosphorous from the water, as well as creating an eco-system. The dense root systems of native grasses and/or wildflowers hold soil in place whether on steep slopes or a rivers bank. The thick stands of native vegetation prevent geese and other waterfowl from passing through. They tend to stay at waters edge feeding on vegetation not on your lawn.

Native vegetation will not only provide beauty to the environment, it will better the environment. With season long blooms and low maintenance, ( 1 to 3 cuttings pr yr.) what better choice then to Grow Native!!!!!

The EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, (NPDES) Phase II Law has now come into effect after a short delay from 1972. Best Management Practices, (BMP’S) were designed to better, as well as, protect the environment. Approved BMP’s could include constructing stormwater wetlands, native vegetation in swales, filter strips, ponds and vegetating a retention or detention basin.

Other areas of native seeding are, wildflower gardens, bird and butterfly gardens, butterfly only, and of course any custom mix that the site will allow. All of these choices are perfect to add that year round color and enhance the quality of your environment.

OUR LATEST PROJECTS INCLUDE THE INSTALLATION OF BIO-SWALES AND DETENTION POND REVEGETATION WITH HABITAT ENHANCING SEED MIXES. 2’ TO 4’ IN HEIGHT THE NATIVE PLANTS HELP FILTER THE RUN OFF PRIOR TO REACHING THE MAIN POND. THE MAIN HOLDING POND ALSO IS UTILIZED FOR SOME LANDSCAPE IRRIGATION, TO AID IN CONSERVING ONE OF OUR NATURAL RESOURCES.
